Class Description
“So you drink wine for a living?” That’s the first question Gil Kulers gets when he tells people that he is a wine writer and critic. While tasting wine comes with the territory, writing engaging and thoughtful reviews of wines does not come so easily. Gil takes students through process from tasting wine to putting down something more insightful than “It’s good. It’s really, really good.” Gil also explores writing about food, dining and travel. An accomplished chef, Gil will demonstrate recipes and reflect on how to transform a mundane, step-by-step food article into something that feeds one’s psyche. The class will also visit a restaurant and get a handle on why there are scant few dining critics worth their salt.
Instructor Bio
Gil would say that he’s living proof that you don’t need to know anything about wine to write about it, however he is one of the few people in the world to successfully navigate the grueling Certified Wine Educator exam. He is also a Commanderie de Bordeaux scholar and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, where he graduated first in his class. He’s worked under two master chefs and helped manage a multi-million dollar, 25,000-bottle wine collection. Named by Epicurious.com as a weekly must-read for wine lovers, Gil Kulers charms readers in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution with his off-beat views of wine in his Kulers Uncorked column. He also writes about food, wine and travel for Golf Digest and once upon a time wrote about crime, city hall and education issues for daily newspapers in New York.
